It occurred to me that contacts needed to be cleaned. You spared me a long journey to the service center and some money, too, so thank you once again, really! What could have happened was that some of the electronic contacts between the camera and the cards were oxidized so that the connection was not working. First I noticed it in my D700, then my D90, which I've had for a few years with no problems.
It's why those little air cans with compressed air exist, or alternatively the little rubber blowers to get dust and stuff off lenses. However, to be honest, I'm very disappointed about this.
